FTP

1. What is FTP?

File Transfer Protocol, FTP, lets you connect to a remote computer, such as a web site hosting server and move your website files to folders you create on the remote computer. This is called \'uploading\' your Web site.
What FTP software should I use and where do I get it?

Many FTP software programs (called clients) available online; CuteFTP Pro and FileZilla are very popular.

If you use Windows XP, you can create a network connection to your Web site. You might also be able upload your file using the software such Dreamweaver or FrontPage that created your Web site.

Why isn't my Web site displaying after I uploaded my files?

To fix the problem:

-Verify that you uploaded your files to /httpdocs.
-Make sure that you named the home page of your Web site using one of the many names we support.

index.html
index.php
default.asp
default.aspx
index.asp

-Ensure that your DNS is pointed correctly.
-Finally, refresh by pressing CTRL + F5 for Internet Explorer and CTRL + R for Firefox

If your site still does not display

There could be reasons which only you can correct.

These may be:

-If your domain name is registered with another service provider, confirm that the name servers (DNS) you used are same as given.

-If your images are not displaying, make sure that the directory where they are located and the image page specified in your code match exactly.

-Linux accounts are case sensitive. For example, if the name of your image is MyImage.jpg and the path in your code is myimage.jpg, then the server will not be able to locate your image.

More useful information for Website designers:
When you develop the Web your code should adjust for the environment change that occurs when you upload site content. Web page URLs, image paths, and database names should all be environment-sensitive and you should use relative URLs when referencing Web pages.

The reason is, relative URLs identify a Web page in relation to, or in the context of, the current page. Because they do not reference the domain name, relative URLs do not require modification when changing environments.

FrontPage

1. How to publish website using Microsoft FrontPage?

Open the FrontPage website in FrontPage that you wish to publish >> Select the publish option from the file menu >> File >> Publish Web >> enter the location to publish the website to like 'http://www.yourdomainname' (do not enter address in quotes) >> and press the publish button >> You will be prompted for the username and password >> enter your default ftp user and password >> FrontPage will then begin to send your website to your web space.

Note: Do not select the option for 'Secure connection required (SSL)'

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

The homepage of your website needs to be named index.html (in lower case) in order to appear automatically when accessing your website at http://www.yourdomain.com

Please do not allow FrontPage to remove any files or directories that you have not created yourself. The files and directories pre-installed are very important for the functioning of the FrontPage extensions and your website may give errors if they are removed.

If after publishing you still see a default page you should first refresh your browser and then check that your homepage has been named index.html correctly. For refresh you can also press CTRL + F5 from keyboard if it is showing you the default page.

Note:

Please note we can only provide limited support for Microsoft software problems which should be directed at Microsoft the software vendors. There are a number of good web sites like www.talkfrontpage.com/ and http://www.fgcu.edu/support/office2000/frontpage/ offering help chat and tutorials.

How do I setup Form and Component in my FrontPage website?

The information below is just a guide on using your Microsoft FrontPage software and further information will be available in the help files of the FrontPage.

On the webpage you want the form on select the insert >> form option choosing the type of form field you require >> right click on the form and select the form properties menu >> then remove the default filename (unless you require information to be stored here) and enter the email address you require the form to be sent to >> after pressing OK on the changes to use an email address this warning box may appear. This is not a problem just a cryptic Microsoft message.
It is important to select the \'yes\' option on this message.

A screen will then appear where further configuration of the email format can be made and an option to add a confirmation page after the form has been submitted.

Now the form just needs to be published to your website.

FrontPage publishing problems.

If FrontPage gives the error 'FrontPage extensions are not installed at 'www.yourdomainname.com'

This could be caused by 2 things

-Extra spaces have been entered on the end of your domain name, this can happen if you have copied and pasted the domain name into the publish location box.
-The location to publish may have been entered incorrectly in the publish menu. This must be entered as specified in your Account Configuration Details email. Make sure there are no extra spaces at the end.

Note: In order for components like counters and forms to work in FrontPage it is important to Publish using http, not ftp. If FrontPage extensions are not installed or have been broken, FrontPage may change and upload using ftp so ensuring that forms and other components do not work.

Please also check 'Use Proxy Server for you LAN' are NOT be checked in 'Connections/LAN settings' under Internet Explorer options.

TIMEOUTS

These can be caused by a

-Weak connection by your ISP to our servers and is related to the size of the website being published. To reduce this problem Microsoft recommend that large websites are broken into smaller subwebs which can then be published individually.
-Firewall or anti virus settings, generally you should keep the size of any web under 20MB to avoid problems. If you are likely to exceed this, create subwebs.

-Anti Virus, check your anti virus settings - if you have a virus checker installed with large files and large amounts of virus scanning the browser software can 'time-out' as it has not received any data from the server for a while - this is because it has been temporarily trapped by the virus scanner. It will appear (incorrectly) that the server has timed-out , when in fact it is the virus checker causing the problems - newer virus checkers should have an option for 'time-out' protection you should beware of this.

-Firewalls, if firewalls are in place it is important to set your ftp to passive mode so that the ftp connection will not be affected.

FrontPage component errors.

Active components require the server to perform some processing in order for them to work. The software that gets the server to do this work are the FrontPage extensions that you have loaded onto the site.

However, before the components will work your copy of FrontPage has to configure these extensions so your active components with the specifications of your active components.

In order for FrontPage to configure them correctly you MUST publish the site from Front Page using http://. If you create the form, counter etc in FrontPage and then FTP it to the site it will not work. So you must use the File >> Publish command.

These active components include:

-Forms - to send an email or save the results to a file on the web server
-Guest books - similar to forms but usually display the results in a web page
-Website Search facilities - to search for matching words etc in your website
-Counters - to count the number of visitors to your website

These components will show errors on your web pages if they have not been setup correctly. These errors generally show the text below on your published web pages.

'FrontPage Save Results Component '

The first thing to check is that the pages have been configured correctly in FrontPage by right clicking on the component and editing the FrontPage component properties. You can check these settings in our component setup guides.

Once any changes have been made the website should be re-published ensuring that the correct publish location is entered ie:http://www.yourdomain.com

If the active component ceases working then the first thing to get it working is to recalculate the hyperlinks of the site. This will not just recalculate the hyperlinks but connect to the web site live and configure the extensions which should get the active components working again.

The instructions for recalculating the hyperlinks follows.

For FrontPage 98
Open FrontPage Explorer >> open Existing Web (www.domain.com) >> enter your username and password >> click OK (This should open your site on our server) >> click on the 'Tools' menu >> select 'Recalculate Links'

For FrontPage 2000
Hit 'File' then 'Open Web' >> click on 'Web Folders' >> double click on your web site >> enter your Username and Password >> click on 'Open'. (This should open your site on our server) >> hit 'Tools' >> click on 'Recalculate Hyperlinks'

Once you have done this you will need to refresh the page in your browser and the active components will now work.

Please note that while we support Microsoft FrontPage server extensions we can only provide limited support for Microsoft software problems which should be directed at Microsoft the software vendors.

General Support Questions

1. What is a 500 internal server error?

A 500 internal server error means that your browser is showing a friendly error message. This is shown instead of the actual error message from the server. You can disable friendly errors in your internet browser. This will show you the real error from the server.

To disable this in Internet Explorer 6.0:

Go to Tools, Internet Options >> Click the Advanced tab >> Scroll the window down a little, and uncheck 'Show Friendly Error Messages'.

What is a HTTP Error 404 - File or directory not found?

This means that the page you are attempting to view does not exist.

Check your file structure to make sure that the file you are attempting to access is in your account. It may have accidentally been placed in a different folder or there may be a mispelling in the file or folder name.

Do you support Image Magick's for PHP scripts?

No, currently we do not support Image Magick's in any plan.

Perl/CGI

1. What is the path to Perl on Linux platform?

/usr/bin/perl
In most CGI scripts the standard path line is therefore #!/usr/bin/perl
What is the path to sendmail on Linux platform?

This may differ from server to server, try one of following:

/usr/lib/sendmail
or
/usr/sbin/sendmail

How do I set permissions for my CGI scripts?

To set permissions for your CGI scripts, you can change them using your FTP program. Typically, permissions are changed to let the web server read, write, or execute CGI scripts.

To set permissions using most FTP programs, select the file or folder you wish to change and right-click 'change file attributes.' Alternatively you can use Plesk file manager.

Most scripts require permissions to be set to chmod 755.

Where do I place my CGI/Perl scripts?

You can run and create your own CGI/Perl scripts and upload it to any location on your web account. Some customers prefer to upload their CGI/PERL scripts to their own cgi-bin directory. The 'cgi-bin' directory has already been created for you and is beside the 'httpdocs' directory. All CGI/Perl scripts should be uploaded in ASCII mode.

To have the domain run the scripts simply access them by browsing to http://www.yourdomain.com/cgi-bin/scriptname.cgi.
